What a nice surprise by hearing this cd!

What a nice surprise by hearing this cd by Philipp Fankhauser. He is certainly a friend of the Copeland family (Shemekia wrote the liner notes), but he did not adopt their style. The opposite is true, the briskness, the airy rhythms, a warm horn section, a very well balanced cd and thus a very personal style.

Don’t go searching for originality or great news on this cd – what makes this cd a good album is its straightforwardness and its energy, its frugalness. You’ll find various influences from Swing, Going To Dallas, from Chicago, Talk To Me, an all acoustic piece with plenty percussion, Home Town, an outstandingly grooving shuffle with horns, Flyin’ High (Yesterday). Welcome To The Real World is a funky tune that could be compared to a Tower of Power track. So, if you feel like treating yourself to a tight and warm cd, think of Philipp Fankhauser.

Oh, and I forgot to say that Philipp Fankhauser is a Swiss guy who lived in the USA and has now returned to his native land. For those that aren’t far away from the Swiss border, you shouldn’t hesitate to go see him live in concert – you’re bound to get a good treat!
